What Are Painkillers?
Painkillers are medicines that are used to treat pain. There are a large number of painkillers available and they all come in various brands and names. They can be taken:
By mouths as liquids, tablets, or capsules.
By injection.
Via the back passage (rectum) as suppositories.
Some painkillers are also available as creams, ointments, or patches.
You can get a plethora of pain-relieving medicines but not all available in the market are worth consuming. These medicines are also known as opiates or opioid medications that vary in potency and treat mild, moderate, and severe pain as per their capacity. Most of the doctors start off prescribing a less-strength painkiller such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. How do painkiller medications work?
Opioid painkillers work by attaching to receptors in the brain and spinal cord, the gut, and other parts of the body. This leads to a decrease in the way you feel pain, changes your reaction to pain and increases your tolerance for the pain.

People who are in pain all the time are usually recommended to take painkillers regularly. These painkillers can be part of an effective pain management plan, but to help avoid side effects and risk of addiction, you should use these medicines only under the doctor’s supervision.
What are the possible side effects?
As with all medicines, opioid also has several side effects. In general, the stronger the opioid, the more likely you are to have side effects. The most common side effects are constipation, feeling sick (nausea), and drowsiness.
A dry mouth can also be a problem. Some people find drinking plenty of liquids or chewing gum may help you with this. If the dose is too high, these medicines can:
Make you feel less drowsy
Cause you to feel confused
Make you feel dizzy or faint-signs of low blood pressure
Slow breathing
Hallucinations
It is important to tell your doctor right away if you think you have any of these side effects. The dose of your opioid medications may need to be decreased.
